At the Thai Buddhist temple at Nakhon Si Thammarat, Wat Mahathat – adverts for these Buddha amulets appeared on the side of Bangkok’s biggest skyscraper and prices for amulets blessed by Buddhist monks fetched prices between £1000 to £1500 .They were believed to give magical properties to their owners and wearers. A pyramid scheme of ever rising prices and active trading markets reached fever pitch before crashing in the way that all speculative markets eventually do.
