Saint Young Men - Japanese manga comic - When Jesus met Buddha

We've mentioned When Jesus met Buddha before in the blog and the story comes from a Japanese manga comic called Saint Young men written by the author Hikaru Nakamura (she is a woman by the way!) in 2007. The story revolves around Jesus and the Buddha coming back to earth to spend a holiday here and shows them in a number of situations trying to survive in the modern world (or more to the point modern Japan). To those with an open mind the manga comic is a refreshing look at modern spirituality. Jesus turns out to be a bit of a materialist spending money on stuff where the Buddha wants to save money and find the rent for their apartment.

"When we are still looking deeply, and touching the source of our true wisdom, we touch the living Buddha and the living Christ in ourselves and in each person we meet." Thich Nhat Hanh, the Vietnamese Zen monk

Best ever song from the Buddha Bar - Wish You Were Here (Bliss)

Whilst searching for Buddha stories for the blog I have kept bumping into videos about the Buddha Bar records. I have always dismissed them until now when I thought I would check them out. They are a compilation of lounge, chill out music and world music, produced by George V Records.

The series was created by DJ and Buddha Bar founder Claude Challe who was responsible for producing the first two albums. The series continues with other DJs, including DJ Ravin, Sam Popat, and David Vişan.

The track below is called Wish You Were Here (Bliss) and is accompanied by ravishing HD images – loving it – the journey continues.

Ecstacy - The state of being beside one's self or rapt out of one's self; a state in which the mind is elevated above the reach of ordinary impressions, as when under the influence of overpowering emotion; an extraordinary elevation of the spirit, as when the soul, unconscious of sensible objects, is supposed to contemplate heavenly mysteries.

The Tallest Buddha Statue in the World - HD

We've covered huge Buddha statues before but this is now (difficult to keep up with China's Huge Buddha arms race!) officially the largest in the world. In this wonderful short travelogue which is a fine example of an amateur short documentary we get to see the approach to the Buddha and some stunning shots of the view from the summit.

Andy Coulson - News of the World and the Buddha

Fat Buddha LSD Acid Blotter Art

The Buddha as a counterculture hero reaches its apotheosis as an image on the banned psychedelic drug blotter art – in this case a Laughing Buddha. The blotter is a piece of absorbent paper which is soaked in a fixed amount of the extremely powerful drug to ensure an evenness of dose. I imagine anybody who took too much of these would have had some form of temporary enlightenment but it could so easily be a vision of hell as of heaven.

All aboard the Indian train to Enlightenment - Buddhist pilgrim railways

The Indian authorities have laid on a special train to take Buddhist pilgrims from the Sri Lanka and all points in between to the major Buddhist pilgramage sites of India.

The pilgrims can see 11 Buddhist sites starting with the paintings and sculptures in Ajanta and Ellora Caves. Other Buddhist pilgrimages are to the massive Stupa at Sanchi; Sravasti, capital of the ancient Kingdom; the birth place of the Buddha in Lumbini, Nepal; the Mahaparinirvana Temple in Kushinagar; Vaishali, where the Buddha gave his last sermon; Buddhist monasteries and temples of Nalanda; Rajgir, where Buddha gave two of his most famous sermons; Bodhi Gaya where the Buddha reached enlightenment; Sarnath – the deer park where he preached his very first sermon; and finally ending at Nagarjunakonda.

Buddhist Chanting - Nothing But Everything (Japanese)

Shingon is a form of Japanese Esoteric Buddhism. It was founded in 804 AD by Kobo Daishi in Japan. It is based on the Mahavairocana Sutra and the Vajrasekhara Sutra, the elemental sutras of Shingon. There are three key secrets – the body, speech and mind and through knowledge of these secrets we are able to attain enlightenment in our own bodies.

If we can sustain this state of mind, we can become one with the Universe, the Mahavairocana Buddha. Nature such as mountains and oceans and even humans express the truth described in the sutras.

In this ravishing HD video and beautiful chanting we can begin to feel the masteries expressed in this rarified form of Buddhist practice.

Finally out of reach -

No bondage, no dependency.

How calm the ocean,

Towering the void.

Tessho's death poem

Abraxas - Japanese Film - Buddhist monk channels his energy through Leonard Cohen

Abraxsas Festival is a new film that gets into the heart of Japan's Buddhist revival

Until recently, Japanese Zen has remained pretty obscure to the average person in Japan. But when the economy turned sour and with corrupt political elite, many Japanese particularly younger ones have been rediscovering their parent’s religion.

Suneo Hair plays Jonen, who is a reluctant Zen monk who on his father’s orders has to wear black and white monk’s robes. As the temple business is a family business.

The position of the head monk goes from father to son, and it's a usually an advantageous situation, with major tax breaks and temple land ownership. But Jonen is a drug-taking depressive who wants to be the Japanese Leonard Cohen.

"Hallelujah" is his bag, not Zen.

Only version of this I could find was in Japanese but looks like a goodie – I will try and seek it out.

“When you seek it, you cannot find it.” Zen quote

Cute young Buddhist kids do the Buddha Way

This one definitely fits right into the aahh or cute box - a series of stills of very sweet oriental kids practising Buddhism in the only way they know how - with innocence and pure hearts. All accompanied by a sickly sweet soundtrack and inspiring pictures. If Hallmark made Buddhist music videos then this would be one of theirs. That said I like it what's wrong with being soft and soppy.

Children are a wonderful gift. They have an extraordinary capacity to see into the heart of things and to expose sham and humbug for what they are.

Psychedelic Buddha Music Video - Buddha Universe

At the Buddha’s Face we like the combination of devotion to the teachings of the Buddha and the interaction with modern technology and art forms. The image of the contemplative serene Buddha is now firmly established as part of the hippy / new age movement as one representing peace and freedom and a rejection of materialism. This video from Vimeo is a particularly good one incorporating relaxing trance music with Technicolor Buddha psychedelic imagery. Tune in, turn on and drop out.

Dhamma Dana (The Gift of Dhamma) Trailer and Full Movie - Burma

Winner - 2009 Queens International Film Festival, USA : Best Domestic Documentary.

Theravadan Buddhism is one of the most ancient forms of Buddhist practice and is the dominant religion of Burma (Myanmar). Sadly for the Burmese people the country is far from free and so the people pursue Buddhism to find their own inner freedom within themselves.

In order to survive the monks and nuns depend upon Sangha Dana: alms offered by lay Buddhists. By giving the lay Buddhists receives back Dhamma Dana: the gift of the Buddha’s teachings.

Dhamma Dana presents the gift of Dhamma with a moving serenity showing how the Burmese Buddhists find their own inner freedom. Filmed solely in Myanmar, the movie presents a powerful peaceful spiritual tradition that few can experience at first hand.

I don't want Burma to be a basket case forever.

Huge Buddhist Palace at Linshan , China

In the previous post we mentioned the largest Buddhist statue in the world at Linshan ,Wuxi ,China. Well the Chinese are no slouches when it comes to creating huge monoliths to their endeavours and wealth. Nearby on the mountain they have built a Buddhist palace of huge dimensions as this CGI tour through it shows. Dhmmakaya will have to watch out as the Chinese have a building instinct as every big as great as theirs. What the ex prince Buddha would make of it all is of course another matter !

The dome ceiling is in fact an Imax screen which has tiny lotus leaves that change colour every minute - simply gob smackingly ridiculously awesome in a disturbing sort of way. This Buddhist resort cost billions of dollars to build and the main hall can accommodate up to 2000 people at any one time for conferences and the like.

The Largest Statue of the Buddha in the World ! Lingshan Great Buddha,Wuxi,China

The rapidly growing economy of China loves to flex its muscles in the world whether it be a new giant aircraft carrier or the spectacular 2008 Olympic Games and it is no slouch when it comes to creating world beating statues of the Buddha . This huge bronze colossus stands - when you include the lotus flower base at over 100 metres and is on the shores of Lake Taihu in Wuxi. Gotta to go at some time in my life for sure.

Classic US 1950's documentary Buddhism - The Man Who Woke Up !

The CIA produced a number of documentaries over the years in order to inform their operatives who would be working in countries where it was necessary to have a knowledge of the culture and religions. In this classic episode a talking head Dr Huston Smith from Washington University gives a very informed and seemingly supportative account of one of the world's oldest religions.

He announces that the Buddha is probably the 6th greatest man who has ever lived and repeats the common quote when the Buddha was asked what was he - a god , a guru or what and the Buddha replied neither - he was awake.

It's a great shame the US didn't as a nation take to heart what this documentary lovingly creates in its experience in SE Asia. Over 3 million people died during the Vietnam War and ultimately for what ?

Probably, no nation is rich enough to pay for both war and civilization.

We must make our choice; we cannot have both.

Abraham Flexner

Charming Thai Student Documentary about Buddhamonthon Park , Thailand

Quite a find here - two Thai college girls have produced an informative and interesting HD documentary about Buddhamonthon Park , Thailand.

In 1956, an important religious park called Buddhamonthon or Phutthamonthon Park was built in Nakhon Pathom Province by the Thai government to celebrate the 2500th year since the Buddha’s death. The park is the largest sacred area in Thailand, with over a thousand acres of beautiful landscaped parkland and gardens.

In the centre of the park there stands a magnificent 16 metre tall statue of the Buddha which is surrounded by four commemorative sites depicting various times of the Buddha’s life, from the cycle of His Birth through to Enlightenment and the Buddha’s first sermon in the deer park until his eventual entry to Nirvana.

A loving heart is the truest wisdom.
