Cute young Buddhist kids do the Buddha Way


This one definitely fits right into the aahh or cute box - a series of stills of very sweet oriental kids practising Buddhism in the only way they know how - with innocence and pure hearts. All accompanied by a sickly sweet soundtrack and inspiring pictures. If Hallmark made Buddhist music videos then this would be one of theirs. That said I like it what's wrong with being soft and soppy.

Children are a wonderful gift. They have an extraordinary capacity to see into the heart of things and to expose sham and humbug for what they are.

Winner - 2009 Queens International Film Festival, USA : Best Domestic Documentary.

Theravadan Buddhism is one of the most ancient forms of Buddhist practice and is the dominant religion of Burma (Myanmar). Sadly for the Burmese people the country is far from free and so the people pursue Buddhism to find their own inner freedom within themselves.

In order to survive the monks and nuns depend upon Sangha Dana: alms offered by lay Buddhists. By giving the lay Buddhists receives back Dhamma Dana: the gift of the Buddha’s teachings.

Dhamma Dana presents the gift of Dhamma with a moving serenity showing how the Burmese Buddhists find their own inner freedom. Filmed solely in Myanmar, the movie presents a powerful peaceful spiritual tradition that few can experience at first hand.

Malaysian Buddhist Horror Movie - Mantra

This is a 2007 Malaysian horror movie the story which concerns a haunted farmhouse Mantra Nilayam, which is owned by a woman called Mantra. Unsuccessfully she tries to sell the house but as people have died mysteriously within it nobody want to buy. Eventually a professor agrees to buy the house as long as someone stays in the house for at least three months. Hero is a hired hand chooses to stay in the house for the payment promised once the house is sold. The movie involves how he discovers the mystery behind the chilling deaths.

The movie review site gives the film a shocking 11% rating which is just about as bad as it gets !

Huge Buddhist Palace at Linshan , China


In the previous post we mentioned the largest Buddhist statue in the world at Linshan ,Wuxi ,China. Well the Chinese are no slouches when it comes to creating huge monoliths to their endeavours and wealth. Nearby on the mountain they have built a Buddhist palace of huge dimensions as this CGI tour through it shows. Dhmmakaya will have to watch out as the Chinese have a building instinct as every big as great as theirs. What the ex prince Buddha would make of it all is of course another matter !

The dome ceiling is in fact an Imax screen which has tiny lotus leaves that change colour every minute - simply gob smackingly ridiculously awesome in a disturbing sort of way. This Buddhist resort cost billions of dollars to build and the main hall can accommodate up to 2000 people at any one time for conferences and the like.

The Largest Statue of the Buddha in the World ! Lingshan Great Buddha,Wuxi,China


The rapidly growing economy of China loves to flex its muscles in the world whether it be a new giant aircraft carrier or the spectacular 2008 Olympic Games and it is no slouch when it comes to creating world beating statues of the Buddha . This huge bronze colossus stands - when you include the lotus flower base at over 100 metres and is on the shores of Lake Taihu in Wuxi. Gotta to go at some time in my life for sure.

Classic US 1950's documentary Buddhism - The Man Who Woke Up !


The CIA produced a number of documentaries over the years in order to inform their operatives who would be working in countries where it was necessary to have a knowledge of the culture and religions. In this classic episode a talking head Dr Huston Smith from Washington University gives a very informed and seemingly supportative account of one of the world's oldest religions.

He announces that the Buddha is probably the 6th greatest man who has ever lived and repeats the common quote when the Buddha was asked what was he - a god , a guru or what and the Buddha replied neither - he was awake.

It's a great shame the US didn't as a nation take to heart what this documentary lovingly creates in its experience in SE Asia. Over 3 million people died during the Vietnam War and ultimately for what ?

Probably, no nation is rich enough to pay for both war and civilization.

We must make our choice; we cannot have both.

Charming Thai Student Documentary about Buddhamonthon Park , Thailand


Quite a find here - two Thai college girls have produced an informative and interesting HD documentary about Buddhamonthon Park , Thailand.

In 1956, an important religious park called Buddhamonthon or Phutthamonthon Park was built in Nakhon Pathom Province by the Thai government to celebrate the 2500th year since the Buddha’s death. The park is the largest sacred area in Thailand, with over a thousand acres of beautiful landscaped parkland and gardens.

In the centre of the park there stands a magnificent 16 metre tall statue of the Buddha which is surrounded by four commemorative sites depicting various times of the Buddha’s life, from the cycle of His Birth through to Enlightenment and the Buddha’s first sermon in the deer park until his eventual entry to Nirvana.

This is a beautiful stop frame animation of a meditating Buddha being drawn in sand. I particuarly like the resonance of a sand picture which is in its very nature both beautiful but temporary - rather like our lives.

The Largest Solid Gold Buddha Statue in the World - 5 Tons $300 million

The largest solid gold Buddha statue in the world is housed in Wat Traimit in Bangkok Thailand .It weighs a staggering 5.5 metric tones and stands an impressive 3 metres tall. At current gold prices of $1500 an oz it weighs around 200,000 oz of gold and would cost in precious metal alone at least $300 million !

Remarkably this was lost to the world for many years as it had been covered in plaster stucco some time in the past to hide its real value and over the years had become forgotten in an abandoned temple. When the statue was moved in the 1930s some of the plaster fell off revealing the true nature of the statue underneath.

Thai monk just loves a farang's magic trick.


The previous post was on Buddha magic and as everything is ultimately connected to everything time for another magic trick. This is a wonderful short video of a westerner travelling together with a Thai Buddhist monk. The monk is amused by the silly westerner (farang in Thai) who does what seems to be an amazing trick - with no sleeves as such his sleight of hand is very professional. Also refreshing to know that the westerner shouldn't really interfere with the monk's robes but as he is hugely amused the old monk doesn't seem to mind !

The Amazing Dissapearing Magic Buddha Trick !


Whilst not in the league of David Blaine just yet he uses some of the very same techniques to achieve his amazingly brilliant magic effect. Tommy Cooper though would have done it so much better - just like that !

Becoming the path - Adashino-Nenbutsu-ji Buddhist temple Japan

There are many public bamboo viewing points in Kyoto, Japan but, most are busy with tourists. The one above is though very quiet, but is not directly open to the public. To get there buy an entrance ticket at Adashino Nembutsuji. At the back of the temple is this beautiful path though a bamboo grove. The stairs lead to a large , quiet and beautiful Buddhist graveyard.

You cannot travel the path until you have become the path itself - Buddha

Star Wars and Buddhism - The Dark Side of the Buddhism


We've mentioned Star Wars and Buddhism before so it is timely to come back for a second helping. Not sure whether this clip is brilliant or just plain rubbish not being an afficiando of Star Wars myself. But is is fairly well made , esoteric enough to be interesting and has a naive intelligence operating behind it so see for yourself. I think it seems to be some sort of attack on Tibetan Lama Buddhist culture and practices.

Young Buddhist Monks Sing the Sun Will Come Out Tommorow


I'm on a roll with singing monks at the moment. This particular clip is lovely one with young Buddhist monks from the Kashmir region of India walking along a beautiful remote road being filmed singing the main theme from the musical Annie. How they know this is a mystery to me as it is always a musical I have shunned and would have to be dragged screaming and probably clubbed to. However these kids seem to be having a fine time - hopefully we won't have to wait till tomorrow for the sun to come out.

At the Buddha’s Face blog we like to celebrate our centenary posts and today is the occasion of our 400th Blog post. I never imagined when I started this project nearly 2 years ago today that I would still be doing this and thoroughly enjoying the process. It has been humbling to see the audience growing exponentially month by month to nearly 3000 visits a week and climbing.

I hope I will be able to continue to bring you our mission to be “dedicated to all things relating to Buddhism and the Buddha - including the bizarre, strange, magnificent and awesome elements of what is the world's most peaceful and inspiring religious philosophy”.

We use inspiring quotes, interesting embedded videos and graphic images to bring Buddhism alive in all its manifest glories.

A jug fills drop by drop as the Buddha said and I hope my 400 'drops' now adds up to a refreshing mouthful of interest from across the web.

A Thai Buddhist House Blessing - with the chef Gordon Ramsay


Thailand is not only famous for it temples and Buddhist traditions but also for its outstanding cuisine. Many a TV chef has beaten a path to the country to try and discover the secrets behind one of the worlds greatest national cuisines. Gordon Ramsay is no exception - in this brief excerpt from Gordon's Great Escape he helps to create food for the daily alms round of the Buddhist monks who have come to bless her house.

Good to see he treats them with respect and calms his normal foul mouth. It's a shame you can't smell and taste over the Internet as the dish sound delicious. Yum Yum !
