If you meet the Buddha on the Road Kill Him !

This is an oft quoted statement and comes from a Zen master Linji who said if you meet the Buddha kill him. This is obviously not meant to be taken literally as Buddhists do not want to kill anybody but as a metaphor it harks right back to the last words of the Buddha "be a lamp unto yourself for your own liberation strive on with diligence." You are not on the path but the path itself.

Buddhism is unique in religions - if you can call Buddhism a religion. The Buddha never said to believe in what I say but that you should find out your own answers - in other words metaphorically kill the Buddha !
