"I never see what has been done; I only see what remains to be done."
I have written about the relationship of Christianity and Buddhism and the reaction of one Islamic scholar to Buddhism – so I was interested to see if there was any linkage between one of the most controversial ‘popular’ modern religions and the ancient way of the Buddha. I’m talking about Scientology the religion founded by the Science Fiction writer L.Ron Hubbard and has at its heart his best selling book Dianetics – The Science of Mental Health first published in 1950.
What is the link - well one of its celebrity adherents Tom Cruise has asserted that Buddhism is the grandfather of the Scientology Religion – in fact he was quoted as saying;
“I was struck by Japanese code of Bushido (the way of the Samurai). It's powerful, it talks about compassion, helping others, responsibility, integrity... timeless values, ways I identify with," said Cruise, who has been a Scientologist for over 20 years. "Buddhism is the grandfather of scientology," remarked the actor in the Australian newspaper the age.
“An insincere and evil friend is more to be feared than a wild beast; a wild beast may wound your body, but an evil friend will wound your mind.”
