Nothing Exists – Zen Koan

Yamaoka Tesshu, was a young practitioner of Zen, and seeking the truth he tried one teacher after another. Finally he went to meet Dokuon of Shokoku.

As he considered himself enlightened he spoke knowledgeably to the Zen master.

“There is nothing but emptiness, our minds, all creatures do not exist – existence is an illusion, there is no wisdom, no teacher, and no mediocrity. There can be no giving and I can receive nothing. This is the ultimate truth. “

Dokuon was smoking his bamboo pipe considering the words of the pupil. All of a sudden unexpectedely he whacked Yamaoka hard with the pipe – hurting him and making him angry.

“If as you say nothing exists – then why are you angry”.
