Who was the Wife of the Buddha ? Yasodhara

Sometimes we forget that the Buddha was originally married and had children – so who was his wife and what happened when he left his family, the place and his previous life to travel the world seeking enlightenment.

When Siddharta Gautama was 16 years old, his father arranged his marriage to a cousin of the same age named Yaśodharā. According to tradition she gave birth to a son, named Rahula. For the following 29 years he spent his life as a prince in Kapilavastu. His father took pains to try to ensure he was happy with all his wealth and power and stories have him as a man who fully enjoyed his life. Indeed one story says that one day Siddharta was making love so passionately he fell out of the palace rolling down the roof!
