Jiun was a Shingon master and a famous Sanskrit scholar in Japan many centuries ago. Whilst he was a young monk he was prone to give lectures to his fellow novices.
His mother found out about this and wrote a letter to him:
"My son, I wasn’t aware that you became a follower of the Buddha to become a walking dictionary for others. There is no end to information, commentary, glory and honour. I wish you would cease this lecture business. Closet yourself away in a little temple in a remote part of the mountain. Spend your time meditating and so attain true enlightenment."
The heart of a mother is a deep abyss at the bottom of which you will always find forgiveness. Honoré de Balzac
